I've wondered for several years whether having dynamically coloured HUDs (at least the outline of their elements) could help eliminate problems with visibility on the background without needing to make them opaque and adding dark borders. You could vary the colour of HUD elements dynamically from something like light-blue (e.g. Halo) to a darker colour (maybe even black) based on what was around it.

Of course there is a performance implication there as you'd need to sample what the rendered colour nearby was before you could do the final pass on the HUD elements. It might be far to expensive to do it within the same frame, but if you did it on the previous frame and only updated it every few frames you might be able to get it down to something reasonable.

Maybe in the future.
