Your idea is good except for once problem. The map itself play a variable. I want to go back to Halo 3 for this one and say that when the maps were big, CTF wasn't boring or had any of the problems you mentioned. maybe because the field was so big that it wasn't like you couldn't get the flag back if it was taken. You had a good chance to get it back if the flag wasn't too far from home base.

There have been times when my team would be down by 2 flag caps and we still managed to win thanks to team work and the fact that most dominated the center field and held it. This may seem boring to some, but to me I had a blast every time. If your team was good enough, you could hold vantage points and win, but any weakness and you could lose the field and people could sneak up behind and steal the flag while you are busy with killing things.

Also never really had a problem with griefing all that much, but them most didn't really care about ranks or unlockables.

So I think the size of the map also plays a significant variable.
