Nanobots have existed in Halo lore as far back as just pre-Halo 2 in Warthog engines to metabolize water to hydrogen fuel.

Also, the Chief's suit has been perforated many, many times. I'm not sure how it can be hermetically sealed and yet he bleeds on the ground so darn often. With every plasma hit it seems.
