I can understand where you're coming from. The thing is though, neither The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings could translate directly into film and still be any good. They're very much fine examples of story telling in book form, and that can rarely go unaltered when making the transition to film. The way I look at it is just to take them for what they are, the books are books and the films are films, each telling the same story but in different ways that make the most sense for their medium.
