In Response To: Re: You mean, "LoTR: The Prequel" *OT* (DMFanella) : I don't know, I thought it seemed pretty much on target. I'm kind of looking : forward to it. I have such conflicted feelings. The Hobbit is a children's story. It features goblins that sing a silly song called "Fifteen Birds in Five Fir Trees" while trying to burn Thorin & Co alive; it features silly elves making mocking fun of dwarven beards. Parts of this trailer seem to understand the book, while others seem to be trying to force it to fit the tone of LotR, which is so very different. Things I like: the visual appearance of the dwarves; the singing (both the solemn chant & the silly "crack the plates" scene); how the dwarves fall into Bag End when Bilbo opens the door; the spider lair. Things that did not need to be: Thorin's "guarantee his safety" line; Galadriel appearing in the movie in any way, shape or form; Bilbo looking at the shards of Narsil. It is like the predecessor movies in this regard: so carefully done; so wonderfully visualized; so perfect in portraying the events written into the story; and so sadly full of complete bullshit invented by the directors. Each thing they've added in the movies (e.g., the speech in RotK about heaven waiting for everyone!) has done violence to the themes & the story. Watching this trailer is like a microcosm of how I feel about the first three movies. I love so much about them, but - and this is a feeling that never happens with the Harry Potter movies, where they do not invent major story elements just for the movies - when the deviate from the books they do so in a way that's so tone deaf, so damaging to the themes that run throughout Tolkien, that it makes me unhappy with the final product. Deeply conflicted (as perhaps only someone with a Tolkien tattoo on his shoulder can be :)
