: I think there definitely was a strong anti-Halsey sentiment there - though
: we've always known she's done bad things, the novel seemed to focus on
: them above all else, ignoring many of the other aspects of her character.
: Especially the scene where she started to pressure the Engineer seemed
: very out of character to me and I suspect it was there simply to demonize
: her even further.

: From what I've followed the controversy around Traviss' Star Wars books, I
: can see this being similar to how many fans felt about her treatment of
: the Jedi; that is, she depicts established cultures or characters she
: doesn't like in an overtly negative light, while using both her own
: characters and established ones as vessels to point out how bad someone is
: every once in a while. This is done even if it defies the universe's own
: logic; I mean, when did ONI become so righteous and open about things
: they'd done in the past? And was it really such a good idea to tell the
: Spartan-IIs about the flash clones? Something like this might compromise
: their loyalty and overall effectiveness, despite their indoctrination.

Osman can basically be used as an excuse as to why all the ONI secrets were being tossed around lightly. Not that I don't disagree. I just think that Traviss had this whole attitude of everything gets exposed after the war, and applied that to all areas of the fiction, whether it should have been or not. Not bad in the long run, just unexpected really. But the thing I liked about it was that the book really served as a coming to terms for all the characters, Spartans included. I think, in that mechanical way of thinking that some people have noted, Traviss saw all the traumatized characters as problems needing to be solved. Which isn't a bad way to look at it in the end. I really like how each individual's issues are being brought to light heavily, and dealt with in realistic ways.
Halsey harassing the Engineer didn't feel out of character to me. Especially after seeing her in Reach. She's not unaware of people's feelings, but when it comes to research and getting work done, she's 100% committed to that cause and that cause alone. Not to mention, that whole exchange was narrated with Lucy's POV in mind. If we had seen the scene from Halsey's, we would have gotten better perspective on why she thought what she was doing was acceptable.
