In Response To: Glasslands thoughts/critiques *SP* (Archilen)

Wish I had the time to write more!!!

: Finally, ONI at Installation 03? When did that happen?

I mentioned it in another post, but I can't figure out if they were actually meaning a HALO Instillation or if they were saying "Orbiting Instillation" 03. Although, the more correct term in that thought process would probably be "Orbital", not "Orbiting", so it very weel could be that we are looking at another Ring.

: • I didn't like how the Sangheili constantly quoted human proverbs and
: sayings; there was a point I started cringing every time one of them went
: "as the humans would say..." which was every so often. First,
: how would they know so many human sayings, and second, why would they use
: them as opposed to their own ones, especially when the ones who used them
: were the ones who still hated humans?

This actually bothered me too. I laughed when you said you cringed. I did the same thing, lol. A few times would be fine, especially coming from some of them who were more fascinated by humanity.

: • This one is admittedly a common problem in stories set in the future, but
: it happens too often IMO; There are a lot of historical references in the
: book and nearly all of them are based on stuff that happened before
: present day, usually WWII. Didn't anything remarkable happen or wasn't
: anything noteworthy said in the next 500 years?

They did mention a few things. They talked about great Patriotic wars, I think there was one in 2090, and one or two more even after that (don't have the book in front of me). Also, the universe as a whole has quite a bit of history bits in between; even going so far as to reference fiction novels like "Rainforst Wars: A Soldier's Tale".

: • It also seems odd how the Elites refer to Hood as "Shipmaster of
: Shipmasters" - apparently, they can't just say "Admiral",
: and anyways, wouldn't their equivalent be Fleet Master?

Maybe they were trying to avoid drawing too many direct parallels with their own infrastructure?

: • The story also creates an apparent discrepancy with the ending of Halo 3,
: namely Rtas' ignorance about the state of their homeworld, and the
: Arbiter's "Fear not. We have made it so" comment when in the
: novel, there's an ongoing civil war tearing their people apart.

He may have been referring more to the fact that Sangheilios was now safe from the Flood, not necessarily Civil War.

: • Some of the new technologies seemed to have been developed unrealistically
: quickly - this is only a couple of months after the games, and yet the
: UNSC already has slipspace drives enhanced by Forerunner tech that serve
: as a plot excuse for slipspace jumps dozens of times faster than before.

Even our own technology does this though. Within very short periods of time we develop technology that drastically improves things like processing speeds or graphical fidelity; it's not hard to imagine similar jumps (ignore the pun) being extrapolated 500 years from now.

: • So the next-generation MJOLNIR suit (Mark VII) is introduced only about
: three months after the last one. That's a ridiculously short time to field
: a piece of equipment that expensive, "new supplier" or not.
: Also, it states that the armor has servos to move its joints, while it's
: been established that one of the MJOLNIR's major differences over previous
: exoskeletons is that it has no mechanical joints and instead uses a liquid
: nanocrystal layer to enhance movement. That is, unless they decided to
: devolve the tech for Mark Seven.

Not sure about the servo point, as I always liked the liquid crystal tech better, but if there was a new supplier, they could have been developing in near parallel to Mk VI, then releasing a more powerful version not long after. Think almost like console development/releases.

: • As a strange and unnecessary change in in-universe nomenclature, apparently
: Prowlers aren't called prowlers anymore; now they're just
: "corvettes" or "stealth corvettes".
: "Mjolnir" is not written in all caps anymore either.

The non capitalization bothered me too. Also, I'm wondering if their ship looked at all like the ships seen in The Package or The Mona Lisa.

: • It was said at one point that Halsey didn't have an AI to help her
: translate the Forerunner glyphs in the Dyson sphere. Where did Jerrod go?
: She had him on her when she entered the sphere and actually helped her in
: the translations just before that.

Good point. Forgot about that. Maybe Lucy punched him too. ;-)

All good points raised... I LOVE this stuff... ;-)
