In Response To: Re: New Halo figures (Archilen) : Sigh. I guess it would be too much to ask for 343i to keep their armor : designs and marks consistent. Yeah, I know the explanation is that there : are lots of variants of each mark that inexplicably appear different in : each product 343i puts out, but they could at least have different : designations for each of the alleged sub-models. : Still, I don't like this whole explanation because I know they could keep the
: I don't mind the occasional specialized armor variant, like what we see in
Yeah.... I vote we stick to the 'real' Mark V. Updating it a la Reach's vision is fine by me. It keeps the overall shape the same, and just adds some more detail, fleshes it out a bit. It keeps it recognizable as "Oh hey it's Master Chief. And he looks like THAT, so that means it's Halo CE era." That's the thing, it isn't just about the iconic nature of the armor, or about pleasing the canon-checkers, it's simply about making visual cues that help the reader understand things about the story and the larger universe. Like say, if I had no idea what The Flood, the novel, was about, but did have some understanding about the Halo story from the games, I wouldn't know from the current cover who the heck was on it, shooting at the tentacles. It's beautiful art. But it doesn't instantly tell you 'what's up'. For example, if you saw Luke Skywalker on a cover of a book, and he had a white shirt wrapped around him and khaki pants, you'd know - "Oh hey this must take place around A New Hope". But if he had a black robe and clothes: "Oh hey this is Return of the Jedi era". The different Marks of MJOLNIR should do the same. In a way, it's beyond canon, it's practically marketing....
