(One of them : sort of got one). This is what everyone seems to forget. They DON'T know that they're going to die. We do, so we assume that they're aware of it as well. But they're not. Until around the middle of the game when the huge Covenant fleet shows up, they really think they can win, and even then, they're still fighting to try and push them back.
