In Response To: Enobling THEM ALL. (Minor spoilers) (Dragonclaws) : Anyone bothered by the glorification of martyrdom displayed in Halo: Reach? : The other Halo games are about surviving, maybe at the cost of other : peoples' lives, but the main protagonists always survive and are : ultimately victorious over their enemies. Reach is about dying so other : people can do that. It sort of seems like military propaganda, though I : know Bungie didn't intend that. Die in service of the people - a very : kamikaze line of thinking. I'm reminded of the Norse people, who believed : that they must die in battle so that they could go to Valhalla and fight : for an eternity. I know Americans are more fond of that theme than we : usually acknowledge, but this seems oddly extreme for an American game. : Anyone have any thoughts on this? I think the writers at Bungie having matured and realized that even the best/brightest soldier will sometimes meet the slipspace bomb/bullet/scarab/energy sword that has their name on it. Reach is Halo's The Empire Strikes Back. In order to win wars lives must be spent. I don't think any of it is military propaganda, there's not enough OOO-RAH for that. It's a group of highly talented and specialized soldiers doing the only they've ever really done, fight. Death is always looming at the edges for these people. I feel that it helps drive home the hopelessness of it all, that even these soldiers can't survive this battle. Hell, imagine when and if the MC comes back. He'll be the Jesus-Spartan.
