In Response To: I hope Bungie Learned a Lesson... (The Guardians) OK, here's my two cents. Bungie isn't Infinity Ward. Halo isn't Call of Duty. OK, all that aside, back to your original point which is "Why not innovate a bunch between games?" I think the reason can best be expressed with a gedankenexperiment. Consider Halo 2. Imagine that Halo 2 had melee combos, running, Jackal Shields, and other shit that was speculated to be in it. Invariably, there'd be Halo purists who say that those significantly change the gameplay from Halo 1. Indeed, it probably would. And to someone like you, it would be accepted. But others go into Halo 2 expecting Halo-style gameplay. The point of what I just said is that even if you had what you wanted, people wouldn't be satisfied. Maybe even the majority of people wouldn't be satisfied. How many people complained about Halo 1's gameplay? If Bungie had changed it without a reasonable cause, what potential outcry would have happened? So then, you say, why make a sequel if you're not going to innovate? Well, I think that's a moot question because Halo 2 isn't exactly Halo 1. There were changes. The storyline advanced, online multiplayer, dual-wielding, etc. Hell, melee lunging, tracking-rockets, and no fall damage were innovations (with respect to Halo CE). If you hate melee lunging and tracking rockets, what makes you so sure you'd like shield-gauntlets and running if they were implemented? This sounds like a nirvana fallacy or even confirmation bias. "Halo 2 didn't have running or Jackal shields so it wasn't as good as it could have been." You honestly don't know. The only people who have the right to make claims about that are Bungie who undoubtedly toyed with those ideas. They were cut not without reason. Maybe time constraints. They could have implemented running, but wouldn't have had time for, say, the development of the Arbiter's character, or something. You would have had running and maybe it would have kicked ass, but then you would have said that the Arbiter was a shitty character. Or maybe Bungie simply played around with those gameplay mechanics and found out they weren't fun. I'd much rather take a fun game minus some "innovations" versus a mildly entertaining game that has running and Jackal shields. OK, so then, why didn't they do these things in Halo 3? By this point they knew what they were doing and didn't have the kind of huge challenges Halo 2 had. Again, they DID add gameplay mechanics. Like you mentioned, there's equipment. But why equipment over Jackal shields? Because equipment is fun. Maybe Jackal shields wouldn't have been I keep restating my point in this post, so I'll end it. Cliffs: - Bungie did innovate between games, so i don't know why you're claiming they didn't - If your claim is they didn't add ENOUGH stuff, then Halo purists would have been pissed if they did - You can't rule out that maybe the innovations you mentioned were tested and found not to be fun, or didn't add anything special to the game. Cliffs cliffs: - Just because something isn't in the game doesn't mean that the game would have been better if it were in the game. Also, I just lost the game
