Re: DeAdLy_cOoKiE steals software
Posted By: Chappy <chappy@nospam.com>Date: 6/1/01 9:44 p.m.

In Response To: Re: So you can play Marathon... (DeAdLy_cOoKiE)

I do not understand this point of view! You call it logical, and claim anyone who doesn't agree is an idiot. Well, I don't agree, and I don't believe I'm an idiot. This (as I understand from your two posts) is your logic:

You take something (game software) without permission or compensation. This is justifiable because:

1) you can
2) you're "human"
3) you're "addicted"

Regarding your first point: I believe that just because you *can* do a thing does not mean you *should* do a thing; nor does it excuse doing that thing. Just because you *can* walk into a software store and walk out with a copy of GameX in your backpack without paying for it doesn't make it right to do so! The GameX authors (and publishers and the store) rightly ask for compensation for their efforts, and it is your responsability (as a human member of society, btw) to do this. Downloading or "warzing" does not provide compensation to the rightful parties, so you have no legal or ethical right to the software.
We're *all* human, are we not? I pay for the software I use, and so do other humans. You imply that being human makes you *fallible*; that you must fail in your moral quandry. I counter that being human makes you *responsible* for doing exactly the opposite; you must do the right thing!
Your last argument justifying software theft is that you're "kind of addicted" to game software. If that is true, and you are aware of this "addiction", I'm sure you recognize its debilitating effects on the rest of your life. Indeed, I hope you recognize its effect on your moral compass demonstrated by your posts! Get help. Stealing is no way to face addiction, nor is addiction a justification for stealing.

Most people would define theft (criminal behavior) as taking something without permission or compensation. This is behavior that you admit to! I can't understand how you justify this behavior. Just because you can do it, doesn't make it right. Some people steal, but that doesn't make it okay for you to do so. You say you couldn't pay rent or buy food if you bought all the games you steal... they're games! Don't steal something you can't afford and don't need. If you're "addicted" and "need" a "fix", get help. Set your priorities, budget your expenses, and buy what you can afford. You don't mind playing older games, so I'm sure you know games are often discounted heavily once they've been on the shelf for a while. You say you pay for the games you subjectively deem worthy. That's the way it's supposed to be, just don't steal the games you don't want to pay for!

If you bother to read this, I'm sure you'll call me names and say I'm hold you up to a standard you can't meet. Why not? I hold myself up to that same standard, and I purchase the games I want to play. I purchase the music I want to listen to. I purchase what I need, and I spend within my limits. Most people do this (even Europeans)*. If you want to be a criminal, that's your choice. I think that's wrong, and I've expressed my feelings in the same forum your expressed yours. I hope you learn your lesson eventually, but your weak justification doesn't make it right (IMHO).

* no offence intended towards Europeans, I only wanted to address his point of view about how it's "easier" to steal software in Europe.

: You should have copied (and read): "(Sorry, I still don't buy games,
: especially dated ones (with the only
: exception of Audiogenics 'Exile', and underrated CLASSIC! =o) ), only those
: which are exceptionally good, I have played literally hundreds of games,
: it's a passion, and if I had to buy them all, I wouldn't be able to pay my
: rent, let alone buy food)"
: which sounds very logical to me. I declare you an idiot if you buy
: 'everything'!

: I warez (sometimes download), because I can (I have approx 60+ CD's with
: pretty much everything that came out for PC, games/apps), I'm human, and
: kind of addicted, I keep things for reference. (I also like playing
: classics, and emulators, on my laptop, it is called nostalgia). But I BUY
: games that are good, and deserve to be bought, but that's rare (I bought
: UT for instance, and Inferno, and I will buy Halo)! I *know* games sort of
: speak. Name a game, I most likely have it (or played it), with few
: exceptions (Marathon in this case). You napster don't you? Same thing.
: Besides you would do the same if you were in my position. (It's not hard
: to get the CD's where I live, in Europe)

: Anyways, thanks a LOT for the link =o)
: Will check it out!
