I honestly think that the learning curve has something to do with it. From the way you (and others) describe COD4, is that it is easier to play and easier to feel good about doing good. The speed of Halo 3 and the lengthy list of weapons (not to mention equipment and vehicles) makes it hard to keep track of your "What killed me?" moments. Those of us who had previous Halo experience may not realize how much it takes to learn everything we know about the gameplay. I think once our friends (Halo 3 players who enjoy COD4) come back to Halo, they'll bring back with them people who are ready for a second try. Who's to say what prompts a second try? Maybe there won't be a mass migration back to H3, but I think the genre of FPS that COD4 falls into usually loses it's fickle players much sooner than games that are truly unique in what they offer. I would say there are enough examples of games like this (Medal of honor, COD3, etc...) to recognize a trend. Gears of War held the #1 spot for a lot less time than COD4. The way I remember it, Halo 2's player count stayed steady and GoW declined in order to put H2 back at the top spot. I believe Bungie to be the hardest working at trying to make a unique game experience more unique all the time.
