Okay, this is a totally absurd idea I had, and I don't even know how it works myself.

But basically, we've been bickering and arguing about what humanity is in relation to the forerunner. Either we aren't, and were "adopted" or we are, and don't know it. I just thought, the debate is so complex, we need to consider more angles. Like how do the Covenant figure in, especially the oft-overlooked prophets? The Forerunners knew them (indeed, knew the whole covenant as individual species), as they had indexed them during the first activation. Why did the prophets discover so much forerunner tech if they weren't the "reclaimers?" It was due to this command of salvaged tech that the prophets were able to make the covenant. Why did we discover virtually nothing? I don't think we can think in terms of accidents when we're talking about the forerunner's legacy. They should have made their message as clear as possible on Earth if we were they or their "adopted children."

Bungie has made this so complex, with so many unexpected twists and turns. It's not going to boil down to one of two simple options.
