In Response To: Graphical evolution of the Halo series. (Gravemind)

Bungie have always been a company that focused on graphics... but not before gameplay. Every single Halo game that Bungie has released has had fantastic visuals and even more fantastic gameplay. I sometimes still find myself in awe at some of the beautiful graphics and attention to detail heaped onto Halo 1 and 2.

Bungie also seems to take a different philosophy to game visuals than many other companies. They focus on building the game itself first without releasing spectacular screenshots like Epic do. You also have to remember that Epic make commercial game engines, therefore any visual kinks are probably ironed out before they even start creating the game. Other companies release game screens which do not represent the final product - the games actually look worse when they are released - not good form.

To see the evolution of Halo 2's graphics in multiplayer - just follow any of the alpha and beta shots Gravemind linked. The beta shots released 6 months from release look much less tight and polished than what was in the final release. Some of the alpha shots look downright ugly. The final game didnt look drastically different, but the added textures, the polish and the lighting escalated the game from ugly to quite striking.

I am confident that the same thing will happen with Halo 3 (especially after seeing the polished effects and weapon models from the recent *ahem* beta footage).
