because the Covenant have a point, purpose, existence, objective, goals, lives, and worth beyond being facelss, gibberish spewing, drooling enemies for you to paste across the landscape. There's no better way to show you the internal workings of the Covenant than to let you play as one of them. Okay, I know you didn't like the Arbiter. But for every person who didn't like playing as the Covenant, I've encountered many more who did. The fact that you don't like playing as him because he's "an enemy combatant" underscores half the point of the Arbiter: to break you, shock you out of that mind-set of "fight for humanity, the Covenant are enemies, etc." The Arbiter makes the Covenant real, and makes the Covenant much more than just a mindless enemy for the humans to fight. They have their own purposes and conflicts and stories to tell, just like the humans. Bungie did an excellent job taking the rosy black and white picture painted in Halo and breaking it over the player's head, and I applaud them for it. |
