Obviously you couldn't have claimed that; that'd be apparent to anyone who's ever given the site more than a five-minute glance. My experience with legal matters, though, is that one never should give away information or "tip your hand" when that information potentially could be used against you at a later point. It's the distinct difference between "knowingly and willfully provided copyrighted materials, in defiance of established copyright laws" and merely "providing" them. One of them sounds a lot worse when they can pin it on you in your own words. While I may sound like a tin-foil hat wearer bandying on about the evils of the recording industry, the problem is that you can never know what they're going to do. (Especially case in point: when former head of the MPAA, 82-year old Jack Valenti, is shown the 6-line Perl qrpff script for removing CSS protection from DVD's; his reaction is priceless.) Hell, Bram Cohen's original manifesto, which wasn't even related to his creation of BitTorrent at all and written two years prior to its development, could still have serious consequences if the RIAA/MPAA decides to try and make it illegal - THAT would be something to stand up for, as BitTorrent does have defined legitimate uses. |
