Re: Not automatic?

In Response To: Re: Not automatic? (MSN)

: When did instantly mean the same thing as automatic?

I don't think I'm going out on a limb here to say that the vast majority of users heard the latter and assumed the former.

Even those who spent a few moments conjecturing on how this system might work, detecting modified content, assumed it would be done by having the client application calculate a checksum for map files and then have XBL compare that with a reference checksum.

Any disparity would mean a modified map.

Bungie's been warning everybody that using modified content means a permanent ban, and not to do it.

So if the system can detect modified content, the question becomes what reason would there be not to effect the ban immediately upon detection of the modified content?

And if there is no reason for doing so, the question becomes-- is the AU actually detecting modified content directly in this manner, or is it doing something else, perhaps detecting other behavior that is a likely result of the presence of modified content?

Of course, it is completely understandable that Bungie would not want to reveal too much about how the AU works to detect modified content, as this will only lead to an arms race as modders attempt to find ways to defeat it. (Not as if this isn't inevitable anyway.)

However, in the absence of such knowledge, while Bungie did not specifically say it would be "instantaneous" I think the assumption that "automatic" implies "instantaneous" is, while perhaps incorrect, still reasonable.

However, even after being corrected (as Tom as already posted that the action of the AU isn't instantaneous) it does lead to other questions, such as how players will feel about how well the AU is working if it works over a longer period of time, and whether that interim will give rise to ways to circumvent the update-- if that were so, the AU might not end up having any perceptible effect at all.

Digital Divan or Digital Divide?
