In Response To: U.S. Open 2000: Rated T? (Dispatcher) > I didn't know that. Heh! Technology affects content affects
Since you can't be very graphic with 16-pixel high sprites with 3 colors, apparaently. Though Mortal Kombat 1-3 got an M anyway. > I wonder if some kind of peer review would work better than what
The ESRB explains their rating system at and http://www.esrb.org/rating.html Apparently, they have a pool of 100 people who are supposedly a cross-section of America. For each title, they randomly appoint three people to review it. Three people isn't a scientific sampling at all, which explains why things often seem so arbitrary. There seems to be little concensus as to the difference between animated and realistic violence/blood. Shadow Man somehow escaped a strong language warning, even though it uses words you can't say on tv. The Myth series escaped a mild language warning. Their sexual content warnings get slapped on games that don't seem to fit the descriptions. Duke Nukem: Time to Kill got a strong sexual content warning although it had no real nudity or sexual activity, just lots of entendre. There really ought to be a sexually suggestive dialogue warning or something. Somethign stronger than suggestive themes. Metal Gear Solid got a Mature Sexual Themes rating, but the description page would seem to imply this means graphic nudity. The only nudity was a guard with a stolen uniform (blurred) and Meryl in her underwear. Once again, it was dialogue that landed it the descriptor. MGS didn't get a use of alcohol and tobacco warning. Anyway, the ratings system could use some work. |
