The Lebanon is aerobraking--hasn't landed yet
Posted By: Red Loser <dnannery@purdue.edu>Date: 5/3/04 2:59 p.m.

In Response To: Re: enkidu_h (OoACoO)

: I mostly agree with this, but I think the recipient is definitely still
: onboard the Lebanon (hence the terminal location), which has completed its
: slingshot around the sun and returned to Frigid. Why else would the
: Covenant broadcast, sent to the Lebanon, interrupt communications?

: I'm still on the fence on the crash-landing argument, because our other
: example of crashlanding, the PoA, was facing an even worse situation. Were
: the Lebanon to crashland, the survivors would be screwed, stranded on an
: inhospitable environment, so I don't understand the decision that would
: have to be made to crashland the ship. Also, Enkidu's "down
: here" comment seems to indicate the recipient is still in orbit.
: Though, a crashlanding would explain the "falling star" comment
: and the Low Battery warning (the Lebanon would be running on backup power
: systems).

As daedelus mentioned above, "aerobraking" is found in the source code. Aerobraking involves skipping in and out of the atmosphere to slow a spaceship down (the space shuttle does this). Presumably, the Lebanon, having returned from its slingshot around the sun, is trying to land on the planet by first slowing its velocity by means of aerobraking. This accounts for the "pretty trail" and "falling star" comment.
