I always figured there would be a) an exterior map like the one in myth, or b) an exterior one like the one in myth, plus an interior one that the player can use when inside a building.

One thing I did in Marathon was mark areas with corpses...I made sure to kill certain aliens in certain places. It was useful when passing through parts of the map that looked similar on the automap.
