It definitely was cool (for me anyway) in Marathon; I totally agree.

I guess it depends on the situation ... I'm not sure if any real decisions have been made on such a thing (until it's seen how everything plays). I think it would be pretty cool if automapping wasn't necessary because the terrain was detailed enough for you to "automatically" know where you were. On the other hand (and I know Bungie is working hard to avoid this ever happening), if you had to cross long distances, you might want the Marathon-style or another style of automap. Hm. It will be interesting to see how it all comes out.

I have a feeling that with an unlikelihood of extreme mazes (although I guess you never know with indoor areas - maybe it will be more needed there), it's less likely that it will be needed. But it would be essential to make the terrain (or elements of it) SO unique that you WOULD know where you were. And, of course, without it being ridiculous (hey, look it's that giant green rock again ...). Heh. Maybe you could spraypaint the terrain as you went. :) Or leave a crater here and there to mark your way. ;) Be innovative. ;)
