Automapping?
Posted By: Loren Petrich <petrich@netcom.com>Date: 11/3/99 8:09 p.m.

One nice thing about the Marathon series is its automap. It's a good way of seeing where one has been, and it's useful for navigating parts of levels that seem like mazes of twisty little passages, all alike.

It is also a sort of third-person view; that sort of view can certainly be useful for some things despite my general preference for a first-person view.

Automaps were common in first- and second-generation real-time-3D indoor engines, such as those of Pathways into Darkness, Doom, Marathon, Dark Forces, and Duke Nukem; however, they seem to have disappeared from third-generation ones like Quake and Unreal.

Might it be good to revive automapping?
