I didn't say they extended them while the camera was on them, quite possably Bungie doesn't have the extention animation sequence done yet so they didn't show them extending them. Anyway the Marathon Story page had a whole thing on this a while ago and I was under the impression that they came to the conclusion that the blade folded up into the little gun-like thing.
