Context-Sensitive Music?

A simple version of such triggered music had been promised for the Myth series, but it never materialized. Some games that have such music, however, are Tomb Raiders 2 and 3; if you get to certain spots, you will trigger some music -- a triggering that is mostly one-time. Also, each level has some background music or sounds which continually loop; however out-of-place it sometimes seems (consider that the blowing wind in TR2's "The Great Wall" is even heard underground).

Each bit of triggered music comes from a single soundfile, however, an approach which will not suit Bungie's purposes. However, there are some alternatives.

One is to use multiple soundfiles and change their mix; this requires greater file bulk, of course.

Another is not to store soundfiles, but to store music sequences; these then get "played" by making the appropriate note sounds. This is the way that MIDI files and Amiga MOD files work. These would be easier to manipulate than soundfiles; one could not only manipulate volume, but also tempo and instrument assignment.

If Bungie could get that to work, that would be most interesting...
