I think hence the mention of the second 'as', well, the first 'as' actually - if you removed it from your sentence it would sound just as ambiguous, are you talking about yourself in the third person?

I still agree with your way of thinking though - the word is applied to the w'rkncacnter on AMS so possibly Tycho was also using it in that capacity - like it was the best translation they had for that concept that they could not understand.
