I think you draw some VERY interesting comparisons. BTW, I think that the player in Marathon DOES wear the Mark I armor, EVEN with that description...that is:
"The Mark Is consumed enormous energy. Either they had to be plugged into a generator or use inefficient broadcast power—neither option is practical on a battlefield.”
Being that the player in marathon is almost always on or near a ship or huge powersource, the whole "broadcast power" idea actually seems possible for him. Sure, on a battlefield, it wouldn't be practical, but since the battlefield in marathon isn't exactly a conventional one...plus, realize that Durandal could probably construct a decent way to transfer power over to the players armor...I mean, come on, he's FREAKIN' DURANDAL!!!
Also, I personally believe that the whole "not in the same universe" thing doesn't exactly fly anymore. If I'm not mistaken, that whole article describing the relationship between Halo and Marathon that used to be up on bungie.net is gone now. All that remains is this little section in their Marathon FAQ:

No, Marathon is a separate story, with wholly different characters, story and gameplay.
Notice it says story, NOT universe. I mean, that's similar to saying that X-men and Spiderman are separate stories, but they're still set in the same universe.
However, also included in that FAQ:

Are the Pfhor related to The Covenant?

No, although they do share some traits –such as enslaving client races, they are entirely separate and each exists in a different "universe."
This could be taken a number of ways...one way to take it (and pretty much the only way if you want to think that Halo and Marathon are set in the same universe) is that their reason universe is in quotations is to imply sarcasm...that is to say, "The Covenant live in their own little universe," which would actually be an entirely normal statement to say since they don't even consider the views or suggestions of anyone/thing that isn't part of the Covenant. I mean, haven't your parents ever told you "[INSERT YOUR NAME HERE], you live in your own little universe." Sounds like something they'd say if you ever tried to explain the intricacies of Videogame plot to them.
And for the record, I'm still undecided on whether or not Halo and Marathon exist on the same timeline. I mean, given what little we know, Bungie could say a number of things, like they're parallel universes...or something like that.
