The three stages from the rampancy terminal on Defend THIS! are Melancholia, Anger, and Jealousy (JAM spelled backwards... easy to remember. There may be a test later).
So by postponing the second stage (Anger) you keep the AI in Melancholia. It is generally believed that Strauss was able to do this to Durandal by making him carry out autonomous functions, mundane tasks such as opening doors, etc. The Pfhor attack on the Marathon allowed Durandal to break free from Strauss' control and enter the second stage... Anger.
Which is when you come in... oh lucky you. ;-)
