I always saw Durandal as having a soft spot for slaves and the oppressed. Not exactly a standard soft spot, considering how he treats the player, but he frees the S'pht (They do speak fondly of him, after all). Equally relevantly, he gave humans a choice when it comes to serving him, and the alternative wasn't certain death. Heck, he even let Blake go home, scott free.

Not a saint, or even a good guy, but he's got his sentimentality.
