: I also went in and raised the "samples" setting to 2048, and things
: actually got worse. So I decided to be crazy, since that's just the way I
: roll, and I made it lower instead. Set it to 512 and everything works
: great. Any idea why that might be?

Well, it makes no sense to me that it would not work at 2048 or 1024, since those are fairly safe. Maybe I better make the default 512 on Macs.

If going to 512 helped you, you can play with going lower, too! The lower it is, the more responsive sounds will be in terms of firing weapons, until you hit the point where the CPU/hardware can't keep up. I can get my Audigy down to 256, and firing is pretty snappy. You should be able to go pretty low on your machine, too, because Aleph One will take advantage of your second CPU for sound code.

: So, I'm wondering if there's some way via MML to make things like liquid
: splash/walking sounds not play, so that I can go ahead and use these
: previously unused (insofar as they were empty) slot for other sounds.

Liquid splash sounds, yes, it's in the "liquids" tag. Footsteps and breathing there might not be MML for yet. If wail lets you add sounds, I think you might be able to use MML to move all those liquid sounds into higher slots you can't access with Anvil, and then use those slots for your extra monsters. If that works (I'm not looking at the code right now, and I've never used Wail) you'll get room for a ton of extra sounds because there are a bazillion splash combinations.
