That works too. No need to map 8-bit to 16-bit any more either, FWIW.

Changing the sample buffer size had no effect? It won't be fixed in future builds if we don't figure out what's wrong, and so far you're the only one with the problem.

Samples are stored as signed 2's complement bytes (-128 to 127) instead of unsigned bytes (0-255). A sound played back with the wrong signedness will sound way too loud and distorted.
