Here's something to keep in mind from today's (1/31) news post:

GS343 says:

"The installation was specifically built to study and contain the Flood - their survival as a race was dependant on it. I am grateful to see that some of them have survived to reproduce."

Survival of which race? Forerunner or Flood?

Well, one thing we might want to keep in mind is the plasma grenade. Remember, those things are pretty freaking brilliant. They know to stick to things like Grunts, Marines and Tanks but not to walls or trees.

Now, if humans were designing these things they probably would have made them so they wouldn't stick to friendly targets and probably, for that matter, that they would stick to hostiles that scooped up the grenades for later use. The fact that the Covenant didn't design the grenades that way suggests that either:

a) They were involved in some kind of civil war, or
b) They don't really understand the technology, perhaps because they stole it from the Forerunner.

Perhaps that was the plan that they had with Halo. Using it they could get a better understanding of that discrimination technology and at least made a better grenade, if not modified Halo outright to kill everything that wasn't Covenant in a 25 light year radius, although GS343 would have never stood for that.
