In Response To: Halo - a look back over seven years (Louis Wu) Where to begin. I first encountered Halo CE in the week between Christmas 2001 and New Year 2002. My friend had gotten an Xbox and Halo for Christmas and he had been telling me how awesome this game was. Seeing as how I was a dab hand at Goldeneye, and half a dozen other PC based shooters I thought I would see what the fuss was all about. A year and a half passed, lots of campaign was played. 4 player splitscreen slayer matches on Blood Gulch and Sidewinder became the usual weekend fair. In August of 2003, as I was preparing to move away for University I bought my own Xbox and copy of Halo. There was no way I was moving away without it. When I arrived in my Halls of Residence, and found that I was living with a bunch of French students, their English was lousy, my French was not much better, but we all understood and enjoyed Halo. As an icebreaker I couldn't have asked for better. A fun filled year of Halo was fitted in along with my studies. Though in hindsight I never again want to attempt to snipe while playing 4 player splitscreen on a 14" TV. :D As I moved into second year Halo 2 arrived, and although my new student flat only had dial up, the folks at the local games shop began to run regular LAN parties for Halo 2. Through these LAN events I met a great deal of my current friends list, and made the acquaintance of someone who was on the same university course who would go on to become as close as a brother to me. Whether it was at the local sports cafe. On the Student Halls network or at the flats of my friends, LAN parties where the bulk of my social life in the academic year 2004/05. Finally when I reached my third year of study, when everything that could go wrong for me did go wrong. When my health failed me and I could not work, when my finances, already stretched thin by two years living, studying and working in the city, finally gave into the pressure of trying to put myself through Uni and I faced the very real possibility of bankruptcy. When I was at my absolute lowest, between Halo 2 and my closest friends who played it, I had a safe place to retreat to when the days pressures got to much for me. It provided me a safety net that allowed me to go on and sort myself out both physically, mentally and now financially. Now two years on I am living much closer to home and my family. I've cleared a majority of that debt, and now have a job where I am able to actively save towards something. Maybe I will fly over from the UK and go to the next PAX. Maybe I will put a deposit on a house. Maybe I'll just go somewhere exotic for a month long holiday. I doesn't matter what I do, the fact is I can afford to do it now and I thank Bungie (and my friends) for giving me a gaming experience that kept me going during the worst of the journey to where I am now. To sum up I refer to my 07/07/08 Bungie Tribute. Thanks Bungie, I owe you the steak dinner.
