In Response To: Halo - a look back over seven years (Louis Wu) Ah Halo. You've been good and bad to me. Made me shout for joy and scream in anger, but I've always loved you... I was visiting a friend's house when he said, "Hey, you gotta check out this game." I plopped down on his couch and he handed me a controller. He loaded up Blood Gulch, then proceeded to snipe me. A lot. But I remember thinking, "Man, this game is fun. Reminds me of Golden Eye" I continued to play. Then he made me leave. I borrowed it from him and played through the SP. "Wow! Look at that ship! AHHH! Fire! A pistol? Really?" As i I played I became completely engaged. I loved the story from start to finish. But the real fun came a bit later. "Hey, did you know you can hook 4 xboxes together and play with 16 people on Halo?"
Oasis and I began to play Halo together more often. He couldn't afford a Xbox, so my home became a hang out for him. We played through SP together and it was so much fun. We began to become close friends. And Oasis got good at Halo. Oasis asked me, "Have you heard about HBO?" "Yeah, I went there once." "We should try some stuff on there. They have lots of tricks." HBO became, and continues to this day, to be a site that I check daily. Best moment from Halo? 4 hour 2 Flag, 3 Captures, Flag must be home to score, Warthogs only, CTF on Blood Gulch. When Halo 2 was released, Oasis wanted to wait in line with me at the mid-night release. I welcomed the company. We got our limited Edition and rushed back home to play. I told him I'd wait and we would play though Halo 2 together when he said he had to go get ready for work. We both were amazed at the gameplay and graphics. It looked so incredible. Then we fought Tartarus together, watched the cutscenes, heard "Sir, finishing this fight." and watched the screen fade to black. We grabbed out controllers and I jokingly said, "and CREDITS!" Then they did start to roll.... We both just looked at each other, mouths agape, stunned. And in near unison said, "That sucks!" The bi-monthly LAN's had now become famous in the town and church Oasis and I attended. Every other Friday night 10 to 16 people crammed into my house bringing xboxes and TVs. Something else I noticed was that with them move from Halo to Halo 2, Oasis had gotten a lot better. I had to adjust to Halo 2, I liked it, but it was different that Halo. Oasis began to be feared at the game nights. I loved having him on my team. "Hey, I got an Xbox!" Oasis told me. And soon got Xbox live. "Awe, Oasis is taken. Well, I'll just take Mariachi 10." Mariachi became a Halo king at the LAN parties. Having live gave him the edge. I loved having him on my team all the more. But not just because he was so good. Mariachi had become my best friend. Someone I could talk to and confide in besides my wife. He still is to this day. I meet many, many other friends that I still talk to often. Halo, you gave me great friends. I got xbox live some time later, but man I sucked online. I hated playing Halo 2 online. I just seemed like everyone was better than me. Oh well. Can't win them all. I had to move to another state, but Mariachi and I still keep in touch. We would chat online, call, and even visit each other from time to time. We even still had LANs. Mariachi called me and said, "I got a code for Halo 3 Beta!" "'I'm on my way!" I responded. I drove up to his house and realized that just as Halo 2 was different from Halo, Halo 3 would be different too. I loved it. It felt fair again and I didn't seem to suck at it. Mariachi was still better, but I wasn't as bad. When Halo 3 came out, we both took vacation time. I made the trip up to his house, and we went and waited in line for our Legendary Halo 3's. Again, we rushed home and played through Halo 3 together. It was pure enjoyment. We jumped into Matchmaking together. We played until I had to leave to go back to work. Mariachi called me up to ask if I would be in his wedding. The best man and I were planning his bachelor party. I felt this needed to be referenced here. http://nikon.bungie.org/news.html?item=21499 Halo, you have given me hours upon hours of fun. You have helped me relax, you have shot my blood pressure up. But more than anything else, you gave me the opportunity to gain an incredible friend. Mariachi, thanks bro. You've always been there for me. Halo, thanks. You introduced us. JeSteR 343
