In Response To: Halo - a look back over seven years (Louis Wu) It was a dark and stormy night....no wait, that's another story. It was August 17, 2002. I don't remember what I had for dinner last night but, I remember the day I bought the X Box and Halo. I knew virtually nothing about Bungie and Halo and I was apprehensive about buying a Microsoft game console. I was almost one year late in getting an X Box and Halo. I was working 65 to 70 hours a week and I had little time for anything other then work and sleep. I vaguely knew about the X Box console and I wasn't interested in yet another game console. I new virtually nothing about the new Halo game and hadn't even seen any of the characters in the game. So this was all brand new to me. After nearly a year of my nephew telling me that "YOU HAVE TO BUY AN X BOX AND HALO" and several attempts from him to twist my left arm to places God never intented it to go, I grabbed my wife and my nephew and we headed off to CompUSA. We arrived back home just shortly after noon. I plugged the X Box into my almost new 43 inch rear projection HD TV and my life was forever changed. I have a home woodworking shop full of tools that pretty much sat unused for the first two years after discovering this game. Our first day with Halo was one I'll never forget. I remember starting up Halo for the first time and being blown away by Marty's wonderful music. We watched the mini cutscenes that began playing and I thought, "hey, this looks like it may just be a good game, if they put that much effort into the music, then the game will probably be good too" What an understatement! I remember my nephew and I getting turned around several times on the Pillar of Autunm...we were such noobs then! I remember being a little scared of the Elites the first time I encountered one, it probably added to my silly fear when he killed me with just one melee. I laughed out loud when I saw my first Grunt. I thought they were cute little fellas with funny voices, but the cuteness abruptly ended when a Needler wielding Grunt filled my ass with needles and killed me, only to watch him walk over to my dead body and say, "get up so can do that again". That incident actually embarrassed me a little and I quickly learned to watch my back more carefully. I was immediately impressed, no, blown away by the physics in the game. The life-like ability to accurately throw grenades, and throw them a long way, was something I had never experienced before in a first person shooter. I remember getting my first successful plasma grenade stick...on a Jackal mind you!, and thinking "what a deliciously evil and satisfying weapon". At the time, I didn't know the plasma grenades would stick to an enemy...what a bonus. I immediately fell in love with the Needler, loving the glorious pink explosions and the Elites verbal reactions just before they exploded. As my nephew and I progressed further into the game, we got pinned down for a while on the Halo map by the two Banshee's. Later on when we met up with Sergent Johnson, we ended up cowering in fear for our lives in one of the small buildings close by the larger structure fighting the large horde of enemies. Our first experience driving the Warthog was pure comedy. We drove it like drunken fools, bouncing off nearly everything and generally having a difficult time navigating through the interior areas on the Halo map. I won't describe our experiences throughout each level because somewhere during 343 Guilty Spark, I fell asleep. I vaguely remember Two Betrayals and the Keyes level, waking up from time to time when my controller started vibrating. My nephew woke me up at the start of the Maw so we could finish the game. It took us several times to complete the Maw Warthog run because of our horrible driving skills. We started a little after noon and finished the game at around 2:30 am that morning. I woke up at around 8:30 am after a night of dreaming of talking Covenant characters. That morning my hands and thumbs were so sore I could hardly button my pants and twist the door knob to exit the bedroom. I quickly drank a cup of coffee...the heat from the cup felt good on my sore hands. We jumped right back into Halo again and played until 1:00 that afternoon. Well, I would write more, but my wife is telling me that we need to go grocery shopping.
