We don't know what precisely Gravemind means.
Is it the big Audrey below Delta Halo/the big tentacles in Revelation?
Or is it the not-necessarily-physically-extant being that can communicate telepathically with not only the Flood but also the player?
The Gravemind is the Flood. The Flood is the Gravemind. Every mind the Flood absorb is added to their hive knowledge. Every body the Flood absorbs is eventually added to the Command Form, unless it is destroyed first.
Like Mendicant Bias, the Flood is a single entity in a potentially infinite number of minds.
The mind does not die. Even one infection form contains (although it is unable to process or access it) the whole knowledge of the Flood. The Command Form is a focus for that knowledge, a compendium, a biological computer fully able to process the eons of information that the Flood possess.
Mendicant Bias is more like the Gravemind than he knows.
