Re: Halo Effect absolutely kills Flood

In Response To: Re: Halo Effect absolutely kills Flood (elpolloguapo)

: I disagree

Me too.

: I think that the flood DNA probably contains, in some form, the compile
: memories of all the flood,

Stop playing Assassin's Creed. DNA does not store memories. The Flood are paranormal magic space zombies, okay? Let's just accept that and drop the "LOL SCIENCE" shit that everyone seems to be pulling up.

: and when the flood reaches sufficient biomass
: to support a GM, the self-sentient GM is able to access them.

This is it.

Right here, this is the big thing. The Flood are like the Borg, a complete hivemind. But each Borg Drone does not possess the capacity to process the whole knowledge of the collective. One infection form does not know all the Flood's secrets. It knows it wants to feed. Rinse and repeat a hundred million times and you have a focal point, a biocomputer that can access the hivemind and understand it properly. This physical manifestation of the Flood hive intelligence is what we call a Gravemind, although the name "Gravemind" could be just as well applied to the single entity of the Flood.

: I also wouldn't say GM expects to survive the activation of 04a, there really
: isn't any evidence to support that

As you progress to the control room, he says, "Do I take life or give it? Who is victim and who is foe?" He wouldn't be trying to raise doubt (elusive as I am? :p) if he wasn't trying to stop you. And he tries hard. Remember, the Flood is a hivemind, indefinite minds in definite bodies. Every thinking-dead Flood form that attacks you is a manifestation of one Mind.

: -he tries to stop you from getting to
: the control room (to the extent that he exists after being blown up), and
: the fact that you don't hear from him after the activation indicates to me
: that he knows it's curtains and simply lets the flood loose to act on
: their instincts, or maybe jsut wants to kill you out of revenge

You actually do hear him; as you are walking out he mentions that he has given up trying. "Resignation is my virtue; defeat is simply time added to a sentence I never deserved." But why would he be resigned to destruction? Why would he think he's lost the war? He knows he hasn't. Just one battle. A costly one, but only a battle nonetheless. Gravemind is not dead. He is simply back to his prior state, unfocused, uncontrolled, untapped potential waiting to be made flesh again ifwhen the Flood reach sufficient biomass.

They will. They always do, don't they?
