Every gemstone you pick up increases your treasure score. However, if you drop one, it's subtracted from your treasure (until you pick it up again).

You can get as many gemstones as you want by exploiting this glitch, as long as you have enough blue potions to keep your health up (since you have to take a hit from a greater nightmare each time).
