It seems pretty concrete that Infinity is a totally different story to M2. The question of whether or not the player or Durandal remembers the events of M2 (or if Durandal remembers the events of the other timelines in Infinity) is bandied about a bit, but I highly doubt it.
There was no jumping off point in Marathon 2. The closest you get is the nova, but it's described as nearly harmless (Durandal: the planets blowin' up, let's roll), and followed by a remote narrator talking about how everything was fine afterwards.
So theoretically if Marathon 2 did end with the release of the W'rkncacnter, and the chaos caused the start of Infinity... guhh. That's just not a really clean scenario. "The ending screen was a ruse! A clever ruse by the W'rkncacnter!" Now that's reaching.

That's clear cut. The NCM vs Manual thing however is crushing my brain slowly and painfully right now.
