In Response To: Re: Temporal Starting Point (Martin)

: Welcome :). You've joined the discussion at the opportune moment, and I
: daresay your inputs will be of great value when the current Tour of Duty
: playthrough threads reach M2 and Infinity, starting quite soon! And I'm
: sure we'll all learn something.

I love learning.

: As for the immediate questions, that of where the timeloop starts and how the
: M2 timeline creates it is quite a wonder ... especially with the M2 final
: screen that describes events going out thousands of years into the future.

: I think one school of thought is that the Infinity manual just outright
: nullifies the M2 timeline and makes it so we can't take anything as
: stemming from it. The central hub of it I guess is what is the experience
: for the Security Officer? One minute we're basically free, and Durandal is
: off doing his own thing - "you can stay and work on your tan if you
: like" - he is less grateful at that point than at the end of
: Infinity, is for sure, and with good reason, but from the SO's point of
: view, how do things happen?

M2 pretty clearly ties up the trih xeem as a "harmless" nova device, with no mention of the W'rkncacnter, and the end screen gives history from a detached perspective that probably isn't lying to us. I always thought that the beginning of Moo was an alternate outcome of the trih xeem; threatened by Durandal's frankly obscene laser technology (2x range? that's just plain unsporting) and the might of the S'pht'Kr, Admiral Tfear sets off the trih xeem like in Marathon 2. Only this time the W'rkncacnter pops out, annihilating the gathered forces of Durandal and Tycho.

From there the various timelines are split off at different points. The "working for Tycho" timeline seems to split much earlier, after the events of Marathon 1. And then when that doesn't work (Tycho being trigger happy on the trih xeem in Confound Delivery), we seem to rewind a bit for Nah Man He's Close, this time fighting more aggressively against Durandal so Tycho won't use the trih xeem.

The "working for Durandal" timeline seems like a total waste; we've done this before and it didn't work. It doesn't even go as well as the first time, and probably because of that we abandon it very quickly.

My limited understanding and low level cognitive faculties tell me there are three and a half timelines in Infinity. Ne Cede Malis is it's own mini timeline, that serves to branch off the plot from M2. After that is an abortive Tycho timeline. Then Durandal, then the last third of the game is a redux of the first Tycho timeline.

But what do I know (<- this will have to be my motto).
