Posts that are responded to in the time frame set by you for this forum WILL be visible at the outset. Threads that contain older posts are visible in their entirety as soon as you follow a new link, even if the thread itself is gone off your front page. The core readers visit often enough that scrolling posts are not important - and any REALLY critical threads are referenced on the front page of this site. I'm not sure why you think UBB-style forums are any better about this - two that I visit (TeamXbox and IGN) have most topics roll off the front page within HOURS, not days. Keeping up there is much, much harder, in my opinion. (Not to mention that I rarely have any idea who's commenting on what, because a topic might include 5 or 6 sub-conversations, and there's no easy way to keep them separate; the responses are jumbled together in the order they came in, not in any logical conversation order. It's like standing in the middle of a dance floor and trying to keep track of everything going on around you at once. (This forum, to follow that sort of metaphor, is more like a small jazz club, with booths you can slip in and out of at will, joining whatever conversation you choose... but being able, easily, to know who's talking, and about what, at any given time.) Again - you can flatten this forum if you like - simply follow the preferences link. |
