In Response To: Rebels and ONI deathsquads...the spartans (Hedgemony) I'm going to throw something into the hopper here. It's a few hundred years in the future but human nature has not changed much. In fact the underling principles behind the story depend on us, the audience, relating to the story and characters. People are still people a few hundred years from now. Whatever is causing a rebellion, it still boils down to human nature, values, and needs. There is just one difference between now and the future, "We are not alone anymore." I'm not talking about aliens, but more specifically AIs. In the future we have AIs and machines that can out do and out perform any human. I'm going to speculate that the Spartan II project is not designed to create super-soldiers (although that term is used to describe them), but to cover a fundimental military and human need. We need commanders on the front lines that can integrate with machines and AIs. One strength of an organized military is command and control. In the war of the future, humans are not fit front line troops anymore -- Machines are used on the front lines. However, what happens when you lose contact with your front line troops, well they follow their local programming. So you have quite a delimma, have commanders on the front line or trust your machines and AIs to make the correct choices on their own. What if an AI makes the wrong decision, perhaps wipes out a whole village of human colonists? Perhaps it was the correct decision militarily speaking but where is the human influence, the compassion, the empathy in all of this? Spartans are tough enough, strong enough, and smart enough to make great front line troops but they take years to create and only a few qualify to become one. I would hardly call them expendible. The only reason to have them on the front lines is because they add value there beyond their cost of creation. As Cortana put it, the MC's architecture is not much different than the POA. Interfacing with machines and still keeping your human side -- if the Spartans can do this without losing their sanity, the Spartan II project is a success. |
