In Response To: Re: twinkle twinkle (ThetaDot)

Whoa, thanks for all the input...

: I don't know what program you are using, but...
: ---
3D Studio Max

: You did tile the star map too much. If you want I could give you some of my
: star maps, some with nebulas and stuff and you can composite them together
: to get a large map.
: ---
It's really just a crummy place holder, but it's only tiled twice I think. I found some good maps today but every little bit helps. Thanks for the offer.

: There should be a supersampling option for the material asigned to your
: sphere, in most CG programs. You would use that on the stars to help with
: the twinkling.
: ---
Heh, I recently disvcovered that button in dealing with some bad anti aliasing on my bump maps. I hadn't thought of trying it on the star map...thanks.

: You need some lense flares coming from the sun and engines.
: ---
I'll reserve judgement on that one...I kinda feel the ol' lens flare gets a little overused but I'll give it a try. :P

: It should be 100% dark on the backside of that planet. All we should see is a
: crescent shape. That crescent should also be very bright, and put some
: glow on it so we see some atmosphere.
: ---
I agree...too much fill on the back side. Atmosphere is coming soon™

: Turn up the specular level on that space ship! When the sunlight reflects off
: that sucker it should be very bright.
: ---
Actually, this particular type of ship is designed for a more stealthy approach...hence lower specular.

: Get some bump mapping for the ship, it's too smooth.
: ---
All the details are bump maps but I think I will add some noise to the overall texture...I think this is what you mean.

: Camera movement is a bit weird. It moves to the right and then starts going
: to the left again as the ship comes by.
: ---
It's a trick...it's actually moving along a curved path, always in the same direction...as does the camera target. I think I will play with a more 3D feeling move.

: Graphical error: You try and achieve a zooming effect in the camera by
: actually animating the camera to move closer to the ship. The problem with
: this is that you can see the stars (which are attached to the sphere)
: actually grow bigger (because the camera is moving closer to the edge of
: your star sphere). For all practical purposes, those stars are infanately
: far away, so would not appear to come close. You can fix this by making
: the star sphere much much bigger.
: ---
Good observation...I will try that.

: I am a computer graphics artist. I do this stuff ALL the time, so please keep
: posting and I'll keep trying to help.
Deal

Again, thanks for all the input. :)
