Re: Perspective: a read for all

In Response To: Re: Perspective: a read for all (The Cosmic Muffet)

Hedgemony was shot in the back before I met him. He layed out the whole story to me after he had corrective surgery to remove a slug that dislodged itself from where it was originally.

He won't mind me telling the story, he considers you all friends.

In 1986, his father returned from sea. His dad was in the navy and spent most of his life in a submarine. The relationship he had to Hedge was a violent one. Very abusive, as a drunk will treat you when you are young. Hedge went to film school and moved to the campus of the university he was studying at. His dad disapproved of Hedge studying film and tried to convince him to join the navy, follow in daddy's footsteps. Hedge refused and stood his ground against the man he had feared since he was a child. His father was angry by this defiance and returned the next day.

Hedge was shot in the back as he turned and walked away from his drunken dad. His father brought to the ground by fellow students before he could turn the gun on himself.

Hedge had to testify in court against his dad via video tape, the shot had almost crippled him. He spent the next year and a half getting his legs back to normal. The bullet still inside and without a way to safely get at it. (It's out now after a motorbike accident moved it).

His father ended up in prison, 14 years in fact. Or at least he would have served that sentence had he not committed suicide over his actions running the course of his life.

Hedge is fine now, but for a while these events messed him up. He told me that growing up the only refuge he had was videogames and that he always fantasized about hurting his dad when he played them. One day he would shoot his dad and then all would be good with the world. He overcame that by becoming a better, stronger man than his father could ever be. By standing up to his fear, he conquered it. Even though he was shot, he still had the strength to be himself, without the need for violence.

Spare a thought for the victims, and understand the consequence to acts of violence. A bit preachy but unless you have been shot, or someone you care about has been shot, it can seem like just a game:)
