I think a masked protagonist could be done, but you'd need a VERY talented actor to pull it off, someone who knows body language to the nth degree. Personally, I thought that the Master Chief was a great character even during the cut-scenes, because his animation was done so perfectly (something that you can't really say for Keyes). In the final cutscene, you can tell just by the way he shakes his head subtly and lets his shoulders drop while looking out the window that he is struggling between feelings of victory and failure. That sort of attention to detail could make a masked MC a very potent protagonist, even in a film.
