Because no one could see his face, his mystique is preserved and at same time, make him looks more appealing. If we do the same with MC, many people will feel more related to the character. Why? Suppose if MC is black, many blacks will feel related to him than whites. If he's asian, many asians will feel related, etc. etc. etc. You get my idea.
