The other way to look at it though is that the marketing sets the direction newcomers to the franchise will go. They're marketing to a target demographic, but they're catering to that demographic rather than directing them in the style that is the product. It's like they're reinforcing a 'wub wub' Halo impression rather than what Halo really is.
It was mentioned earlier, but it is annoying when trailers don't really have anything to do with the movie or game genre, and are really only made to cater to a specific audience; like re-cutting dialogue, using music that isn't in the production, providing a feel that really has nothing to do with the movie. People go in expecting something else.
Now, the marketing is using wub wub, and promoting the typical gaming frenzy. So, when it's released, that's where all the activity's going to be. Yes there will be many who fully and greatly enjoy HALO for what it's meant to be, but the marketing (presumably just intended) is forming a style of gamer crowd.
So while it's not "meant to target the ENTHUSIAST, it isn't meant to target YOU, it isn't meant to target US", it's also not really doing anything to present Halo as HALO and encourage the enthusiast, you, me, us, carry on our lineage for years to come :)
There will always be enthusiasts, but as long the marketing goes the way of the wub wub, the Halo fan landscape will also end up reflecting the turmoil of the wub wub... =/
