: But that's just what E3 (and every other game/entertainment/whatever expo)
: is, and always has been. Some finite number of people have access, and
: they report out to the larger community.

And what is their purpose for being there? They can be a filter - showing different audiences the parts most relevant to their interests, repacking the information in different forms.

But they don't need to BE THERE to do that. 343 can simply link everyone to a gameplay video with one of their employees explaining features. Straight from the horses mouth.

So when you get down to it there has to be another point to them being there: to ask questions, to probe, to actually play it first hand and give impressions, feedback, critique, commentary.

But a lot of these impressions are largely descriptive - relaying information (a lot of it NEW) that could have been delivered directly.

But I suppose that's a long-standing complaint against video game news etc.

: I don't understand why anyone would consider OD 'broken by design.' It's
: simply an additional item/weapon/ability that can be dropped into the
: game. It can be tuned in all sorts of ways between now and release.

Kills = drops. Drops = kills. It's a self-sustaining cycle. One that very much has the strong potential to turn minor advantages into run-away scores. Obviously Nexy was playing with people that were way below his skill level, but if every 5 kills (or whatever) you get a drop that will guarantee another kill - extending your lead for free while simultaneously launching you towards yet another OD.

You might ask 'what is the difference between this and the timed weapon spawns of old?' Well, by design those weapon drops often required the temporary sacrifice of your map positioning to go acquire them, and they would only come at certain time intervals. Difference with ODs is (seem to be) that you can just spawn them in very close to yourself so you don't have to sacrifice your positioning, and the faster you get kills, the faster you get more ODs which leads to more kills... etc.

Whereas with on-map weapon spawns, if a team is getting kills fast, then they have to fall back to more 'standard' weapons for a time before the next drop comes in, giving the other team a chance to take their position on more even terms.

And frankly, no, the idea that this is just 'one of many' gametypes and variations and uses or whatever doesn't reassure me. Especially not if this is the default - which will then be the most played. I'd rather default be the best gametype. I'd rather that pretty much everyone plays the same gametypes. That mechanics are consistent across the multiplayer.
