My mom actually is dyslexic but she was able to teach me to read well enough that by the time I was 7 (and a few months) I was reading at a college level. So much of it is wanting to learn, and having someone teaching you that cares if you learn.

maybe you're like me, above average in an area enough that you forget people who are below average at it aren't (necessarily) stupid, but then again

this is pretty likely and would help to explain it. I'm a nerd and in ages past that meant reading a lot, and I did, but if I'd been born a few years later it probably would've been less thanks to TV and video games (I grew up with antenna TV, basic cable, an NES, an SNES, and not much money for games).
