In Response To: Re: Halo [R]Evolved - The Maw (sithhead)

: You're putting a lot of faith in the abilities of an AI driver.

McKay isn't strictly AI-driven. She follows a predetermined path, only reacting to explosions or obstructions.

: I'm not sure
: how I feel about anything on rails at all (I've grown to loath the TotS
: sequence on legendary; LASO challenge was hell), or about changing the
: physics of the sequence so that the warthog cannot be flipped.

It's more a sign of McKay's skill as a driver than a change in fundamental physics. It's not like you'll be shrugging off rockets. Her AI is so specialized that she always manages to swerve around the things that would upset the Warthog's balance.

: Also, what about co-op? Does
: every player get a gunner seat in their own rocket hog, mix and match
: types, or passenger seats as well?

I must admit, I did not anticipate that.

Wouldn't be much fun if two players had to randomly get assigned to passenger seats. Perhaps everyone should get a Rocket Hog, but they'll be strung out along the line, rather than clustered together.

: If the warthog was trying to jump a trench, you can have the phantom shell
: knock it into the trench. Have it open up on one end to a larger arena
: (about the size of beaver creek, maybe) and get blocked off by rock pileup
: at the other end, and you don't need soft-kills (because kill-zones should
: only be used if absolutely necessary, IMO).

I was thinking more like a cliff than a trench, like dropping from a table to a floor. McKay would have been able to stick the landing no problem if the Warthog hadn't been shot out of the sky.

And I understand your aversion to kill zones, but I don't want the player getting completely disoriented by suddenly finding themselves in a box canyon. They should always be able to see the Autumn up ahead and the fighting around them.

Cortana says you can't make it on foot. The limited resources and lack of cover should dissuade most from wandering very far.

: Interesting idea that has no precedent in mechanics of a halo game. Are we
: talking ice blocks here than they can melt out of (like bioshock), or
: frozen into statues that can't thaw, or what? This idea may be more
: trouble than it's worth as far as implementing it would go.

The way I imagined it, hostiles would get flash frozen and then shatter like glass at the slightest touch. But you're probably right, too much trouble.

: I don't like the idea of Cortana telling us to blow up a ship before she has
: an escape plan. Simply omitting the accessing bit would make it sound
: infinitely more self-preserving.

Hmmm, good point.

: Elites were still mostly wort-ing in this writing, yes? I agree with Jaydee
: that Zuka should be shown as different somehow. Does he know enough
: English to be able to yell "Demon" perhaps?

It might be appropriate.

: Gauss turrets could be a problem in the future, especially if the player
: wants to try and shoot down the later banshees.

I shoot them down all the time. Granted, it's easier on the lower difficulty levels. =D

Even if you do get two lucky shots with the Gauss turret and take down the Banshees as soon as they're in sight, Echo 419 has already been shot to hell. You can't save Foehammer, period.

: If we're removing Johnson hugging the elite as the legendary ending, should
: you throw him in one of those pods? I'll admit that I don't remember where
: the books put him, but it serves as an explanation to the player for how
: he got back, and Master Guns doesn't have to know.

Johnson was on a Pelican with Locklear, Haverson, and Polaski. That's why I made mention of Echo 206 from the book, which is generally suspected to have been Polaski's Pelican.

As far as the core narrative is concerned, the player needs to think he is the only living thing that got off Halo. Revealing Johnson survived as well kind of trivializes the Flood as a threat.

I may transcribe a Campaign DLC detailing Johnson's little adventure, but I'll just go ahead and tell you how it would end:

[Highlight for spoilers]
Johnson manages to play catch up and arrives outside the Autumn's crash site in the middle of the fighting. While MC is inside and fighting towards the engine room, Johnson finds Echo 206 down, but not out. He teams up with an ODST and a Navy officer (Locklear and Haverson) to defend it, Firefight-style, while the pilot (Polaski) makes a quick repair. As soon as the Pelican's systems are back online, they receive a broadcast warning from Cortana that the Autumn is going to blow and everyone who can evac needs to do so ASAP. (I'll have to add this to the campaign transcript.) With no other friendlies left, Johnson's group decides to make a run for it.
[/spoilers]

: I like what you've done with the game. Maybe if 343i isn't announcing a Halo
: remake at E3, then they'll make one in the future. If so, I would very
: much like for them to take this rewrite into consideration and implement
: some of the revisions. Great stuff!

I won't be holding my breath, but thanks. =)
